What I’m about to say may not apply to everyone, but I’m certain there are others out there like me. It’s easy to make plans, get all excited about them, take off sprinting down that road, and then life happens and you get blown off course. Whether it’s an actual exercise discipline like running, an occupational discipline like keeping up with paperwork, a lifestyle discipline like healthy eating or a meditative or prayer practice…life happens.
Sometimes you have a week of stormy weather and it blows up your running plans. Sometimes you get so swamped with work that you get behind. Sometimes you decide to splurge a little and three days later you realize you’re back to eating a pint of ice cream every night and you snap out of your sugar-induced trance and realize it’s time to rein it back in.
Not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.
But the question then becomes, “How do we recover?” And I have three simple words that unlock the true key of recovering from those setbacks. Ready for them?
Just. Move. Forward.
That cycle of guilt and shame that usually occurs when we miss the mark and get blown off course can be a tether to keep circling the drain and the more you hang on to those mistakes, the more you keep going through those cycles of diligence and neglect. It’s true. Talk to any recovering alcoholic and they’ll tell you, those feelings of guilt and shame keep you locked in the cycle that perpetuates the very issues from which you are so desperately trying to find freedom.
Success is not linear. Ups and downs are normal. Your goal is an aggregate upward trajectory through all the ups and downs which are an illustration of your continued attempts at success in whatever it is you are accomplishing.
Be kind to yourself as you fail. See what there is to learn in those moments. See if you can figure out what it was that threw you off and why, on an internal level, you allowed it to get you off balance. You’ll even increase your success in more areas by exploring those questions. But do not feel shame or guilt. Those emotions help nothing. In fact, they are part and parcel of the mechanics that kept you trapped for so long in the places you don’t want to be.
